Nexam’s crosslinking technology builds upon work performed in the US by NASA, other governmental organizations and several universities in the area of high-temperature resistant materials mainly from the 1990’s onwards.
Perstorp AB, a specialty chemicals company, was the owner of a US high-performance composites business delivering materials into high-end aerospace applications during the 1990’s and 2000’s.
The history of Nexam as a supplier of crosslinkers to the polymer industry originates from the activities carried out in the former materials division of Perstorp AB during this period, regarding production processes, specifications and new product development.
In 2007 a development program was initiated to explore the crosslinking technology into other thermoplastics and thermosets, outside of the polyimides area, and in 2008-09 large leaps in development were made and customer evaluation projects initiated.
Perstorp sold its US high-performance composites business in late 2008, as part of a larger restructuring.
In July 2009, Nexam was founded as part of a management buy-out from Perstorp regarding specific technology, production process knowledge and intellectual property rights.
Nexam developed the NEXIMID product platform and production capabilities to become the world’s leading supplier, offering a full range of these types of crosslinkers, to the polyimides industry and customers.
Nexam is working with multiple global polymer producers, mostly under confidentiality agreements, with developing products for a range of thermoplastic and thermoset polymers. Commercial product introductions are under way, expanding Nexam’s brand and product portfolio.
Extensive work in technology development, new product inventions, securing intellectual property rights, production optimizations, scale-up and commercial production is continually ongoing.
Nexam initiates working relationships with several leading European-based contract manufacturers regarding both small and large commercial volumes of Nexam products.
The office and laboratory facilities of Nexam Chemical are currently located at Medicon Village and Ideon Science Park in Lund, Sweden.
In January 2012, Nexam acquired its former UK based contract manufacturer for scale-up and smaller commercial volumes. The company is located just outside of St. Andrews (www.nexam.co.uk).
